Sexing Marijuana Plants – How To Tell Difference

Sexing is an important part of the growing of cannabis plant. The knowledge of sexing is very vital for the growers to get high yield of marijuana. Sexing is basically determining the sex of the plant i.e which plant is male and which is female. Reproduction in plants is mainly done by the pollination of males and female. It is therefore very important to know the sex of the plants. Male marijuana plants are less potent than female plants. Cannabis plants exhibit their sex in the initial two weeks of the flowering phase. This stage of the plants is critical in segregating the male plants from female plants.[ ]  [ ]  [ ]  [ ]  [ ]  [ ]  [ ]  [ ]  [ ]  [ 10 ]  [ 11 ]  [ 12 ]

How To Sex Marijuana Plants? Difference Between

How to differentiate between male and female marijuana plant?

Male cannabis plants are identified by the appearance of ‘ball’ like structures. As a grower, you should be able to locate these balls to sort out the male plants. Usually the ‘balls’ are located at the nodes of the male plant i.e. where leaf and branch connects.  There are numerous balls which form a cluster in male plants. Once you have identified your male plant, destroy it or transfer it to a different room away from the original grow room. Female plants have only one ball which split and two small hair-like structures called pistils which protrude out to catch the pollens from male plants. Pistils assure that your plant is female but it can still be a hermaphrodite. Hermaphrodites are the plants having the same sexes. You must carefully inspect plants grown from seeds for male flowers and even trusted marijuana clone if it has undergone stress such as lights during its dark period.

Do the male marijuana plants contain THC?

THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol is one of the active components of Marijuana plant which has psychotic properties. The effects of THC are experienced by the users as soon as it enters the blood stream. It is present in all the marijuana plants, male and female but in varying amounts. Marijuana with low content of THC will have less effect. Male canabis plants contain THC but in much smaller quantity than female cannabis plants. The male plants have THC on their leaves, but it is comparatively in low amount than present in the leaves of female plants. The amount of THC present on the flowers of female plant is approximately 20%, whereas the male plants have merely 3 % THC on the flowers. Due to the presence of low THC content, the male plants of marijuana are not always harvested.

What are the uses of male marijuana plants?

The male marijuana plants create pollen grains which brings pollination in the female flower. After the process of pollination, female plants produce seeds. In the absence of male cannabis plants, the female plants produce flowers without seeds. Usually growers destroy the male flowers to avoid the females producing seeds as this decreases the level of THC in female plants. Male marijuana plants also have THC but in lesser quantity when compared to female plants. They use male marijuana plants only for breeding purposes. Unless one has the plans to breed or to produce seeds, it is always recommended to segregate the male marijuana plants from female plants as soon as their sexes are known. One must always keep in mind that even one or two male marijuana plants can turn the whole yield into seeds.
